Lenition in contemporary speech from Gran Canaria: two corpus case studies

This paper discusses the corpus of Gran Canarian Spanish gathered in 2016 order to provide an in-depth sociolinguistic account lenition processes identified dialect. After a detailed description methodology and database preparation, I present two case studies showcasing utility such corpora. First, show phonetic social factors governing distribution different surface variants underlying coda /s/, pointing generalised variation hence incompleteness any weakening options. Second, comparison spontaneous speech produced by 6 informants with their productions from laboratory study, which leads conclusion that is subject yet another important factor: setting options chosen on each occasion are reflections competing stages same trajectory systematically applied language users.
